Homage to Ginsberg: Performance PR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
On September 9 at 6PM Theater for the New City (155 First Avenue at 10th St), presents the new Arts Loisaida Foudation : Artistas de Loisaida Art Exhibit Homage to Ginsberg opening reception as part ofthe Howl Festival, Elodie Lauten will perform a new setting of a poem by Allen Ginsberg entitled Velocity of Money - this was written in the late 80s in reaction to the recession that followed the 1987 stockmarket crash and is surprisingly relevant to our time.
The performers include soprano Mary Hurlbut, Andrew Bolotowsky, flute, Jonathan Hirschman, guitar and Elodie Lauten on piano. This is an extension of Elodie Lauten's Waking in New York - portrait of Allen Ginsberg, which was included in Seqenza21's list of the 100 most influential works of the last three decades. The music cleverly integrates rock and jazz elements with surprising chord changes but remains ear-friendly in tonal, classical framework.
Elodie Lauten is an original post-minimalist who writes piano, electronic, chamber and orchestral music. Her landmarks are neo-operas evolving or deconstructing the classic form: The Two-Cents Opera premiered in March in at Theater for the New City; The Death of Don Juan reissued on CD by Unseen Worlds called "a masterpiece of new music" (2008). The discography includes nearly 30 titles, released on Lovely Music, O.O. Discs, Point/Polygram, New Tone (Italy), 4-Tay, Tellus, Nonsequitur, Capstone, Pitch, Studio 21 and Unseen Worlds; this label will reissue a double album of her piano music this fall. In the visual and media arts, Lauten has had solo, collaborative and group exhibitions in Soho, Chelsea, the East Village and at Lincoln Center. In April 2009 she was featured along with Yoko Ono in the "Women Forward" exhibition at the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center. Note that Elodie Lauten will perform her S.O.S.W.T.C. commemorating 9/11 on Friday, September 11 at the New Museum (235 Bowery, 7PM) - on the same bill, Arthur's Landing, the band devoted to the music of the late Arthur Russell.
